Cycle for Cancer Research UK: Alex’s Mission

Alex is a man on a mission. With two London Marathons under his belt, In April of 2022, he will be cycling from John O’ Groats to Lands’ End for Cancer Research UK. His goal isn’t just to raise awareness about the charity but also prostate cancer which is the leading cancer in men in the United Kingdom.

Maybe you know or maybe you don’t… It may not come through with his outward smiles, willingness to help or genuine good looks but Alex and his family have lived through and dealt with cancer more than once. We often think… “it won’t happen to me”. But, when it does, it is a sucker punch -being taken off guard by the fact that prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men of the UK.

Not really knowing the statistics and then watching as you, as well as family members, move from unaware to survivor, gives a person a new sense of purpose. Therefore, it is no surprise that cancer awareness often becomes a survivors purpose. If you can only raise awareness in hopes that your effort will bring with it another survivor.

Did you know that there were 48,487 new cases of prostate cancer in men between 2015 and 2017 in the United Kingdom? There were almost 12,000 deaths from prostate cancer from 2016 to 2018. And while the survival rate is almost 80%, do you want to take your chances? Early diagnosis and treatment is key. If only one person is saved through this awareness campaign… perhaps if only by thinking about how crazy the man is by doing the cycle challenge… then it is worth it!

John O’Groats in Scotland

This is the reason for the cycle event through Cancer Research UK. It is not a small undertaking. If you are not familiar, this journey takes you from the most extreme North to South points of Great Britain. At one end is the Southernmost tip of England and at the other is the most Northern location of Scotland. The trip is approximately 1000km and can take anywhere from 10-21 days to complete. The route is an iconic challenge among cyclists and offers some of the best scenery England has to offer. It definitely isn’t for the faint of heart but a bucket list experience to say the least!

Want to help or cheer Alex on? You can help him reach his goal by visiting his webpage and donating towards this important cause! Any amount is graciously appreciated. If you can’t donate, consider sharing the links with your family and friends!
